Y-Chromosome DNA Devereux Surname Project

Devereux/Devereaux/Devericks Y-Chromosome DNA Project

Descendents of Jonathan Devereaux of Connecticut

One individual has been tested and a haplotype of R1a1 has been identified.  Some studies indicate this may represent Scandinavian ancestry, and would support a Norman origin for the branch of the family and a link to the historical ancestor, Robert, Archbishop of Rouen.

Descendents of Thomas Devericks Senior of Virginia

Two independent lines of descent tested with a match identifed.  Haplotype R1b1b2a1b3 identified.  Currently this pattern is felt to suggest origin along the English border of Wales, Cornwall, Western France/Brittany, and portions of Spain.  This could also be suggestive of connection to the Devereux family originating in Normandy, but does not suggest Viking ancestry at present.

Of additional interest is this pattern is shared with individuals bearing the surname of Hodge and Parrish, and both possess origins in the British Isles.  Further testing pending.

Descendents of Devereux/Devereaux's of Ireland and England

Several individuals originating in Ireland have been tested and two haplotypes identified, R1b1b2, and E1b1b1.  R1b1b2 is common throughout Western Europe, and subclade testing has not been performed to further define the origin.  The E1b1b1 pattern suggests potentially a Jewish origin for at least one Irish family.  Further line testing is pending.

No individuals with confirmed English ancestry have been tested yet.
